How to Tell If Your Roof Has Hail Damage

North Texas is no stranger to severe weather. When a hailstorm rolls through, your roof takes the brunt of the impact. But unless you have massive, golf-ball-sized hail, the damage isn't always obvious from the ground. Left untreated, even minor hail damage can lead to leaks, mold, and structural issues.

    Visible Signs of Hail Damage

Hail doesn't just hit shingles; it affects your entire roofing system. Here are the most common signs that your roof has sustained damage:

    • Granule Loss: Shingles are coated with tiny granules that protect them from the sun. Hail impacts can knock these granules loose, exposing the asphalt underneath to damaging UV rays. You might see these granules collecting in your gutters or at the base of your downspouts.
    • Dented or Bruised Shingles: Sometimes a hail hit doesn't break the shingle but leaves a "bruise" — a soft, spongy spot where the fiberglass mat underneath has fractured.
    • Cracked Shingles: Large hail or high winds can cause shingles to crack, typically in a circular or half-moon shape around the point of impact.
    • Dented Gutters, Vents, and Flashing: Metal components show hail damage much more clearly than shingles. If your gutters, roof vents, or metal flashing have small dents or dings, it's highly likely your shingles are damaged too.

What You Can Check From the Ground

We never recommend homeowners climb onto their roofs after a storm — it's incredibly dangerous. However, there are several things you can safely check from the ground:

    • Look for dents on your garage doors, mailboxes, or AC units.
    • Check your gutters and downspouts for small dings.
    • Look for excessive shingle granules (it looks like coarse black sand) washing out of your downspouts.
    • Check for torn window screens or cracked glass.
    • Look up at the roof edges for missing or visibly torn shingles.

Why Hail Damage Isn't Always Obvious

A "bruised" shingle might look perfectly fine from the ground, or even from a ladder. But that fractured fiberglass mat means water will eventually seep through. This is why professional inspections are crucial — damage that goes unnoticed now can turn into a major interior leak six months down the line.

What to Do If You Suspect Damage

If a major storm just rolled through your neighborhood, time is of the essence. Texas insurance policies typically have a strict deadline (often 12 months from the date of the storm) to file a claim.

    1. Document what you can see: Take photos from the ground of any dented gutters, broken windows, or granule loss.
    2. Do not sign anything yet: Beware of "storm chasers" knocking on your door asking you to sign a contract immediately.
    3. Schedule a professional inspection: Call a local, reputable roofing company (like Blackhawk Roofing) to perform a thorough, on-roof inspection. We know exactly what insurance adjusters look for.
    4. Review the findings: A good roofer will show you photo evidence of the damage before recommending you file a claim.
