Wylie Roofing, Ten Years After the Big Hailstorm
Nobody in Wylie needs a lecture about hail. On April 11, 2016, a single supercell dropped softball-size hail on the city. The National Weather Service says 80% of homes in Wylie were affected and damage topped $300 million. NOAA's records describe hail punching through some roofs, a 3.5-inch stone measured near Wylie East High School, and photos suggesting stones at least 5 inches across.
Many Wylie roofs were replaced after that storm. If yours was one of them, it's now about ten years old and has been through several more storms since.

Storms since 2016
The 2016 storm gets the headlines, but it wasn't a one-off. NOAA's Storm Events Database also shows:
- March 23, 2016
Golf ball-size hail at the Wylie/Murphy border, less than three weeks before the big storm, shattering windows in cars and homes.
- April 6, 2018
Hen egg-size (2-inch) hail in Wylie.
- March 14, 2022
Golf ball-size hail in Wylie.
- March 25, 2025
Ping pong ball-size hail piled 4 to 6 inches deep at Wylie Fire Station 1 on South Ballard Street.
Wylie's history goes back further, too. A tornado hit downtown on Mother's Day 1993.
Why a "newer" roof still needs a look
A ten-year-old roof isn't old, but it isn't immune either. Hail that doesn't leave a hole can still crack the fiberglass mat under a shingle or knock off the granules that protect it from UV. Wind can unseal tabs so they lift in the next storm. Damage you can't see from the driveway still counts. It's also much easier to document right after a storm than a year later.
If a storm came through your part of Wylie, a storm damage roof inspection is the best way to know for sure. If you're planning to file a claim, you may want to know how long a roof insurance claim takes.
