Hail and Storm Damage Roof Repair in Dallas
Dallas roofs have been through some of the costliest storms in Texas history, and many of them are old. Census data puts the median Dallas home at 1981 construction, with about 64% of homes built before 1990. Older decking, older ventilation, and roofs that have been patched more than once all make storm damage harder to spot and more important to document. We focus on North and East Dallas and the neighborhoods in between.

Storms that reshaped Dallas roofs
A few events from NOAA's Storm Events Database show what Dallas roofs deal with:
- June 13, 2012
The Lakewood hailstorm. Two supercells crossed Dallas County, and in many areas the hail lasted at least 30 minutes. Lakewood was one of the hardest-hit areas: baseball-size hail left holes in roofs, and historic homes on Swiss Avenue took roof damage, with a few repairs estimated at more than $100,000. Baseball-size hail broke skylights at NorthPark Center, and tennis ball-size hail fell near US-75 and Forest Lane. NOAA says insurers expected final losses of about $1.1 billion.
- October 20, 2019
The North Dallas tornado. An EF-3 tornado tracked almost 16 miles across northern Dallas County. It followed Walnut Hill Lane from Harry Hines Boulevard through the Marsh Lane and Midway Road corridors. One home on Northaven Road west of US-75 lost its roof and exterior walls. The tornado then crossed I-635 and ran along Greenville Avenue. NOAA cites the Insurance Council of Texas estimate of more than $2 billion in insured damage from that night's tornadoes.
- May 28, 2024 & March 4, 2025
Dallas Love Field measured a 75 mph gust during the May 2024 windstorm and 78 mph gusts on March 4, 2025. Winds like that lift and crease shingles even when nothing blows off.
- April 25, 2026
Hail estimated up to 3 inches fell around Dallas Baptist University and blew out car windows, a reminder that big hail isn't limited to the north side.

What we inspect
Every inspection is free. After hail, we look for bruised or fractured shingles, granule loss, and dented vents, gutters, and flashing. After wind, we look for creased, lifted, or unsealed tabs and damaged ridge caps. On older Dallas homes we check the attic for decking stains and loose vent pipes. If your home has tile, slate, or another specialty roof, we note that before recommending anything. Damage you can't see from the driveway still counts.
If a storm left your roof exposed, ask about our emergency roof tarping while you decide on next steps.
How claims work when you hire us
- 1
We inspect and give you photos and a written summary.
- 2
You decide whether to file and report the claim to your insurance company.
- 3
We can meet your adjuster at the house and walk the roof together.
- 4
Your insurer decides what's covered. You pay your deductible, as Texas law requires. Contractors can't legally waive or absorb it.
- 5
We pull the permit, install the roof, and close out the inspection.

Dallas permits, and the extra step in historic districts
The City of Dallas runs permitting through its DallasNow portal. The city's DallasNow guide says a roofing permit is required for most re-roofing projects, except minor repairs that don't affect the roof's structure or weatherproofing, and that a general contractor has to create the application. Homeowners who do their own work use the city's Homeowner's Exemption from Contractor Registration form.
If you live in a historic district, check the district ordinance before you pick materials. In the Swiss Avenue Historic District, for example, replacing a roof with the same or original material without changing the color counts as a minor exterior alteration, and roof colors have to complement the house. A different color or material means more review, so plan ahead.
