Plano Roofing for Hail, Wind, and Insurance Claims

Plano's housing is older than most of its Collin County neighbors. The Census puts Plano's median home at 1993 construction, and about 40% of homes were built before 1990. On a house that age, the shingles are only part of the story. Decking, attic ventilation, and past repairs all affect how a roof handles the next storm, and how a claim goes afterward.

Hail history you can map to your street

NOAA's Storm Events Database lists these Plano storms, some down to the intersection:

    • March 23, 2016

Golf ball-size hail near Parker Road and the Dallas North Tollway, and again near 15th Street and Alma Drive. It shattered windows in cars, homes, and businesses. NOAA estimates the storm caused about $700 million in hail damage across northern Dallas and southern Collin County.

    • April 11, 2016

Less than three weeks later, 2-inch hail at Legacy Drive and Chase Oaks Drive and at Independence Parkway and Hedgcoxe Road, plus tennis ball-size hail two miles north-northeast of Plano.

    • April 20, 2023

3-inch hail reported about a mile south-southeast of Plano.

    • May 19, 2023

2-inch hail near McDermott Road and Independence Parkway, part of the Collin County hail event that NOAA's preliminary estimates placed in the billion-dollar category.

    • May 28, 2024

A bow echo tore through early that morning. Two houses near Parker Road and Independence Parkway were damaged by falling trees, and large limbs came down near Jupiter Road and Park Boulevard.

    • September 25, 2024

2-inch hail at Parker Road and Midway Road.

    • March 4, 2025

Wind damaged the roof at Plano West Senior High.

If you replaced your roof after the 2016 storms, it has been through several more since.

    What a Blackhawk inspection covers

We walk the whole roof, not just the slope facing the street. We look for hail bruising and fractured shingle mats, granule loss, wind-creased or unsealed tabs, and dents on vents, gutters, and flashing. We check pipe boots and valleys. On older Plano homes we also look in the attic for stained or soft decking and for vent pipes that have come loose. That matters later, because Plano's final roof inspection checks the attic too.

The inspection is free, and you get dated photos and a written summary either way. If the roof just needs a repair, we'll tell you.

Filing a claim, step by step

    1. 1

We inspect and document the damage.

    2. 2

You decide whether to file, and you report the claim to your insurer. Your policy sets the deadline for reporting.

    3. 3

When the adjuster comes out, we can meet them on site, walk the roof together, and show them what we documented.

    4. 4

Your insurance company decides what's covered. You pay your deductible. Texas law requires it and bans contractors from waiving it.

    5. 5

We pull the permit, install the roof, and schedule the city's final inspection.

What Plano requires for a re-roof

Plano's Building Inspections Department has a written re-roof handout. The main points:

    • Permit required. A permit is required for re-roofing. Work covering no more than 25% of the roof doesn't need one.

    • Final inspection includes the attic. The inspector checks vent piping through the roof, confirms the rafters are in position, and makes sure water heater and furnace exhaust vents were reinstalled correctly.

    • No "seconds" shingles. Unpackaged "seconds" shingles aren't allowed, and rotten decking or rafters have to be replaced.

    • Tear-off required for some materials. Wood shake, slate, clay, or cement tile has to be removed before a new roof covering goes on.

    • Metal and tile need extra steps. Metal and tile roofs need non-combustible underlayment and an extra partial inspection.

    • Check your HOA. The city tells homeowners to check with their HOA about deed restrictions.

Plano's fee schedule lists residential re-roof permits at $75.

    Neighborhoods we serve in Plano

We serve West Plano near Legacy West and The Shops at Legacy, the Willow Bend area, central Plano around Haggard Park and downtown, and East Plano near Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve and along US-75. We also cover neighborhoods near Arbor Hills Nature Preserve and along Preston Road, the George Bush Turnpike, and the Sam Rayburn Tollway.

We install roofing products from Owens Corning and CertainTeed. Damage you can't see from the driveway still counts. If a storm came through your part of Plano, get the roof looked at before a small crack turns into a ceiling stain.
