Murphy, TX Roofing Built to Murphy's Rules
Murphy is a city of homeowners. Census data shows about 94% of occupied homes in Murphy are owner-occupied, the highest share of any city we serve, and about 81% of homes were built in 2000 or later. Most of that growth came after the President George Bush Turnpike opened in 1999. The population went from about 3,100 in 2000 to about 21,000 in 2020. That means many Murphy roofs went on within a few years of each other.

Murphy has stricter roofing rules than most cities
This is what makes a Murphy roof job different. The City of Murphy's reroofing permit requirements say:
No overlays. New roof coverings can't be installed without first removing the existing ones. Every Murphy re-roof is a full tear-off.
Approved materials only. Roofs have to be 30-year composition shingles, standing seam metal, terra-cotta tile, concrete tile, or slate, in muted colors.
No wood shingles or shakes, and no metal roofing of the kind used on agricultural or industrial buildings.
Metal has limits. Only flat-pan standing seam metal with a factory finish in an approved color is allowed. Bare galvanized or aluminum roofs aren't.
Fire rating. All roof coverings have to be at least Class C.
That affects your options before the insurance adjuster ever shows up. A bright or unusual shingle color may not pass, and a cheaper overlay isn't allowed. We plan Murphy jobs around these rules from the start, so nothing surprises you at permit time.
Recent storms in and around Murphy
Murphy sits between Plano and Wylie on FM 544, right in the path of storms moving through southern Collin County. NOAA's Storm Events Database records:
- March 23, 2016
Golf ball-size hail at the Wylie/Murphy border, breaking windows in cars and homes. That storm caused about $700 million in hail damage across northern Dallas and southern Collin County.
- April 11, 2016
Less than three weeks later, a supercell affected 80% of homes in neighboring Wylie.
- April 23, 2021
Golf ball-size to hen egg-size hail near Murphy.
- May 6, 2025
Half dollar-size and ping pong ball-size hail reported in Murphy.
Murphy has fewer storm reports under its own name than its bigger neighbors, but hail doesn't stop at the city limit. If a storm came through your part of Murphy, schedule a storm damage roof inspection before a small crack turns into a ceiling stain.
What we check
Damage you can't see from the driveway still counts. On a free inspection of a Murphy roof, we look for:
- Hail bruises, mat fractures, and granule loss on every slope
- Wind-lifted or creased shingles and damaged ridge caps
- Dents on vents, gutters, and flashing
- Worn pipe boots and flashing
- Leaks or damp decking from the attic
You get photos and a written summary you can share with your insurer.
You file, we document
You report the claim to your insurance company. We give you the photos and notes to support it, and we can meet your adjuster on site to walk the roof and show what we found. The insurer makes the coverage decision. Under Texas law you pay your deductible. Contractors can't legally waive, rebate, or absorb it.
If you have an HOA, submit for architectural approval early. Between the city's muted-color rule and HOA color lists, it's best to pick a shingle both will accept. Texas Property Code §202.011 generally stops an HOA from banning impact-resistant shingles that look like approved shingles and are equal or better in quality.
