Frisco Roofing: Hail Inspections and Replacements

Frisco is one of the newest big cities in Texas. It was the fastest-growing city in the country from 2000 to 2009 and again in 2017, and Census data shows about 81% of its homes were built in 2000 or later. The median Frisco home dates to 2009. A lot of homeowners here assume a newer roof can't have problems yet. The hail record says otherwise.

    Frisco's hail record

Frisco sits in both Collin and Denton counties, and storms hit both sides. From NOAA's Storm Events Database:

    • June 11, 2023

Hail up to 3.5 inches near Main Street and Teel Parkway. Frisco Fire and Rescue reported 2-inch hail, and golf ball-size hail was reported near Legacy Drive.

    • May 19, 2023

2-inch hail on Preston Road in south Frisco, during the Collin County hailstorm that NOAA's preliminary estimates placed in the billion-dollar category.

    • March 14, 2024

A brief EF-0 tornado formed on the UNT Frisco campus and crossed Preston Road. The same night, tennis ball-size hail fell at El Dorado Parkway and FM 423.

    • September 25, 2024

2-inch hail near the Dallas North Tollway and SH 121.

    • March 24, 2019

Baseball-size hail near Coit Road and Main Street.

    • March 26, 2017

Frisco Fire and Rescue measured 2.25-inch hail, with 2-inch hail near Preston Road and Main Street.

That's six significant hail days in eight years, spread from the Tollway to FM 423.

    New roof, real damage

Newer shingles hold up better, but hail over 2 inches can crack them. A crack in the mat or a patch of lost granules may not show from the yard, but it shortens the roof's life and can let water in. Damage you can't see from the driveway still counts. If your home was built around 2009 and still has its original roof, that roof is now about 16 years old.

On a free inspection we check:

    • Shingles on every slope for bruises, cracks, and granule loss
    • Ridge caps, hips, and valleys
    • Dents on vents, gutters, and downspouts, which help show hail size
    • Flashing, pipe boots, and skylights
    • Lifted or creased shingles from wind
    • The attic for signs of leaks

    The claim process with Blackhawk

    1. 1

Inspect. We document what we find with photos and notes.

    2. 2

Report. You file the claim with your insurer and check your policy's reporting deadline.

    3. 3

Meet the adjuster. We can be on site to walk the roof with the adjuster and show them the damage.

    4. 4

Decision. Your insurer decides what's covered. You pay your deductible. Texas law requires it and bars contractors from waiving it.

    5. 5

Build. We pull the permit, replace or repair the roof, and schedule the final inspection.

    Frisco permits and HOA approval

    • Self-service permit. Frisco lets registered contractors pull a self-service permit online for re-roofing with the same material. The permit is issued right away and the placard is printed and posted at the job.

    • Material changes. Changing materials (shingle to metal, for example) may need a different review, so we check with the city first.

    • Fee and code. The city's fee ordinance lists a $150 reroof permit, and Frisco currently builds to the 2024 International Residential Code with local amendments.

    • Check registration. You can check any contractor's Frisco registration status on the city's eTRAKiT site.

    • HOA approval. If your subdivision has an HOA, it may require architectural approval for shingle style and color before work starts. If you want impact-resistant shingles, Texas Property Code §202.011 generally stops an HOA from banning them as long as they look like approved shingles and are equal or better in quality.

    Where we work in Frisco

We serve homes from the Stonebriar Centre area and The Star on Gaylord Parkway to Frisco Square, neighborhoods near Toyota Stadium and Riders Field, and newer subdivisions along El Dorado Parkway, Teel Parkway, Main Street, and FM 423. We also cover Plano roofing, McKinney, and Allen.

We install roofing products from Owens Corning and CertainTeed. If the last storm dented your gutters, it's worth having the shingles checked too. When repairs aren't enough, we handle full roof replacement projects too.
